Cinephiles, Prepare For ALT EFF: India’s First Film Festival On The Environment

Back with its third edition, All Living Things Environmental Film Festival (ALT EFF) 2022 is ready to enthral cinephiles with all things environment, community, and sustainability. Here is all you need to know about India’s first film festival on this topic. By Ralan Kithan

All Living Things Environmental Film Festival, or simply ALT EFF, is India’s biggest (and possibly, only) film festivals in India which focuses on the environment, community, and sustainability. The festival, which started in 2020, is now in its third year. This time, the festival will feature 55 films, all of which be screened virtually. An eminent jury, which includes stalwarts like Indian film producer Kiran Rao and national award-winning film director Amit Masurkar, have helped pick the shortlist for the special screenings.

What is ALT EFF?

ALT EFF is a one-of-the-kind film festival which showcases the beauty of our planet. It is creating awareness of the environment and social issues through film screenings; and debates on environmental conservation, climate change, and nature. To further assert its motive, the film festival is entirely accessible and free of cost.

About ALT EFF 2022

This year’s festival features a lineup of 55 films in the feature, short, and animated categories, from India and abroad. The festival will run from November 17 to November 27, 2022 and will have a virtual screening which will available on a ‘pay-as-you-feel’ model. It will also have screenings of select movies, as picked by a jury, in key cities across India.

Meet the jury

The jury for ALT EFF 2022 includes filmmaker and producer Kiran Rao; award-winning director of Sherni and Newton, Amit Masurkar; President of the Wildlife Conservation Trust- Dr. Anish Andheria; Pradip Kishen, a filmmaker and environmentalist; and Lindsay Crowder, Climate Program Director at Exposure Labs.

Select Screenings at ALT EFF 2022

The selection of film includes All That Breathes, directed by Shaunak Sen, which won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and the Golden Eye award for the best documentary at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The story is about two brothers Nadeem and Saud who devote themselves to protecting Black Kite birds in the midst of Delhi‘s hazardous pollution.

Still from the film Into The Dust

Into Dust, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Orlando Van Einsiedel, tells the incredible true story of Perween Rahman, a woman who worked tirelessly to protect the rights of Pakistan’s poor community. Rahman’s story emphasises the global water crisis and highlights the dangers of water shortage.

Neighbird revolves around the narrative of a Gurgaon-based couple who, during COVID-19, discovered that there is a wealth of biodiversity even within a square kilometre of a city, but that one must venture out and explore.

How to attend

The films will be screened virtually through this site. You can attend and watch the inspiring curation of films by signing up with your details. Registrations for the same will remain open till November 16. Upon registering, guests can attend the virtual festival free of cost.
