What is it?

A heritage farm-stay

Ideal for:

Slow travellers; conscious travellers

Review of  Shivgarh House Of Sustainable Living:

Shivgarh House Of Sustainable Living
The 200-acred Shivgarh House Of Sustainable Living is surrounded by three private lakes.

Shivgarh House Of Sustainable Living transports you to another world that is miles away from city chaos. Dotted with three private lakes that are graced by hundreds of migratory birds (Shivgarh falls on the natural path for the Siberian bird migration), crops of varying kinds, over one lakh trees, and nature-inspired experiences, this 200-acred heritage homestay takes privacy to another level. An underlying love of the planet permeates through the spaces, courtesy of the many sustainable practices the farm follows.

Sirius
Shivgarh House of Sustainable Living currently has six cottage-style accommodations, with more slated to open soon.

The six cottage-style accommodations—with more in the works currently—are designed to bring  guests closer to the nature. Think views of the private lakes, personal tree pads, alfresco seatings, and more. The room’s names—each inspired by celestial occurrences such as Sirius, Eclipse, Luna and Vega—further pay ode to host Pushpender Singh Rajawat’s love for the planet. The fact that 80 per cent of the property boasts of being solar-powered further asserts the conscious efforts, while locally-made and sustainable furniture—down to the wooden clocks and combs in the rooms and organically-made colours for the building’s exteriors—reassert their eco-conscious claims. My personal favourite addition? A circular platform-style swing swaying outside my lake-view cottage, Sirius, overlooking the tranquil private lake where chirruping bulbuls keep me company. As the sun sets, the melodious birdsongs make way for howling jackals seemingly breaking into a night-time concert.

Tractor rides
Opt for a tractor ride to make the most of your farm experience.

When you’re at Shivgarh House Of Sustainable Living, ‘history’ is another permanent guest. Housed within a 450-year-old heritage haveli, the eco farm-stay has snippets of the yesteryears peeking out from every corner. A grand 450-year-old arched doorway, believed to be a gift to Sawai Man Singh, an erstwhile Maharaja of Jaipur, looks on over an equally-old Sawai lake. Further ahead, restored chhatris sit perched on the spot the King’s many wives sacrificed themselves by jumping into the fire or sati. Repurposed chhatri columns make up a fire pit, ancestral paintings double as decor, and a vintage chair and table set graces the al fresco restaurant.

Shivgarh after sunset
Shivgarh House of Sustainble Living is solar-powered.

Truly embodying the concept of slow travel and making the most of the abundant natural beauty of Shivgarh House Of Sustainable Living, the hosts organise a range of experiences. Whether it’s the traditional Rajasthani thaali brought to life with locally-grown or hyper-locally sourced ingredients, a temple trail to a nearby Jain temple that is arguably one of the oldest of its kind in the world, bird watching in the wee hours of the morning, meals on a tree deck, boating on a private lake, or even hikes or cycle rides through the private oasis of wilderness, this nature-loving retreat encourages them all! For me, the true crowning glory rests on the quiet lakes where I enjoy high tea and snacks while floating and gazing at the sunset. As the sky’s orange hues melt into the horizon, stars begin to twinkle in the night sky, the neon solar-powered fairy lights outlining Shivgarh House Of Sustainable Living shimmering in the water take the experience to a surreal level.
