Travelling to San Francisco just got a whole lot easier with Air India’s longest direct flight from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, to the American city, which the airline has decided to operate twice a week from January 11, 2021, onwards. In fact, the bookings for the same have already started from November 25, 2020.

“This would be the first non-stop flight between Bengaluru and the United States, connecting the world’s two tech hubs – the original Silicon Valley and the Silicon Valley of India. This will tremendously help passengers, enabling faster and easier access to cities on the West Coast of the United States,” a statement by the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) was quoted by Indian Express.

Reports suggest that the airline will operate a Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft, with 238 seats, to cover the longest route of over 14,000 kilometres, in the longest time period of over 16 hours, as per BIAL; hence making two records.

“This route, at this point in time, will be third in the ranking for longest routes operated by all carriers,” a United spokesperson was quoted as saying by Times Of India.

Interestingly, both Bengaluru, as well as San Francisco, have been ranked at the top two positions out of the 45 most digitally-advanced cities in the world.

Apart from this, Air India is also reportedly all set to start direct flights between Hyderabad and Chicago from January 9, 2021, onwards.

Currently, Air India operates direct flights to the United States from Delhi and Mumbai. The plan to operate Bengaluru-San Francisco flight was announced back in 2015 as well, but was later postponed.

While United and American Airlines have planned their own India-US launches, Vistara is also looking forward to starting operations on direct routes between the two countries.

As of now, while scheduled international flights are still suspended due to the ongoing pandemic, these flights will be operated as a part of the India-US air bubble.
