Andaman & Nicobar Islands To Be Connected With Chennai Via A Brand New Submarine Cable

This is how the new cable launch at Andaman & Nicobar Islands will help boost connectivity, communication, sea trade and tourism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has today launched the submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) connecting Chennai and Port Blairin order to help the people of Andaman & Nicobar Islands with better communication and networking facility. The over 2,300-kilometres-long cable has been laid at a cost of about INR 1,224 crore.  

“Inauguration of the submarine Optical Fibre Cable in Andaman and Nicobar Islands ensures — high-speed broadband connectivity. Fast and reliable mobile and landline telecom services. Big boost to the local economy. Delivery of e-governance, telemedicine and tele-education,” the PM tweeted. 

The submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) which was inaugurated via video conferencing will also connect Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep (Havelock), Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island, and Rangat. This connectivity will enable the delivery of faster and more reliable mobile and landline telecom services to Andaman & Nicobar Islands, at par with other parts of India,” narendramodi.in mentioned. 

The foundation stone for this project was laid by the PM on December 30, 2018, at Port Blair.

I hope that our efforts in this decade will not only provide new facilities to the people of Andaman and Nicobar island but will also help give the island a prominent place in the World Tourist Map,” PMO India tweeted 

During his virtual address to the nation, he said that this launch will give a boost to the blue economy as fisheries, aquaculture and seaweed farming make an important part of it. He added that once this cable will be ready, it’ll allow big ships to dock here, increase sea trade and will give new job opportunities to the youth of the country. 

He also informed that the construction work on the deep-draft inner harbour in the East Coast is underway in full swing, and there is also a proposal of INR 10,000 crore to construct transshipment port in Great Nicobar.

Further assuring that Andaman & Nicobar Islands is going to develop as a hub of Port Led Development in the coming timesspecially because it is located at a very competitive distance from many ports of the world, the PM said, “In order to increase the facility of Water Connectivity between the island and the rest of the country, the four ships being built at Kochi Shipyard will also be delivered in the coming months. To strengthen the road connectivity of North and Middle Andaman, two major bridges and NH-4 widening are being worked on rapidly. Capacity to handle 1,200 passengers simultaneously at Port Blair Airport will be ready in the coming months.”
