Bhutan's Hidden Cafes: A Quick Guide For The Explorer & Foodie In You

Gems within a gem, that’s what this is. Bhutan may still be unexplored, but for those who plan to make it to this beaut of a country, we have the ultimate list of cafes, which no one will tell you about. Leave no stone unturned to make sure your visit to Bhutan is EPIC! By Shubhanjana Das

1. Palden Roastery

A secret amongst locals, we hear Palden Roastery is believed to serve the best coffee in town. Given that they roast their own beans, it comes as no surprise that this place is a regular amongst locals. But, now that you know about Palden, don’t forget to bring a bag of their freshly roasted beans for your French Press at home. You know, a fresh brew of Bhutan’s essence and nostalgia every morning! Besides, they also serve veg Bibimbap, just in case you may be into one of the most celebrated Korean dishes that are also Palden’s speciality.

2. Art Cafe

When we say ‘hidden’, we mean how Art Cafe is hidden from plain sight even though it allegedly has some of the most delicious cakes in town. Even though we are surprised that the smell of vanilla and freshly baked cakes doesn’t give away Art cafe’s secret, but we’re happy to tell you that Art Cafe can be your hideout during your visit to Bhutan. P.S. Don’t get your hopes up about the ‘art’ in Art Cafe.

3. Upstairs Restaurant

You know you have discovered a hidden gem when you walk into the cafe and a door leads you to the outdoor seating area and you find yourself looking at Thimphu’s mountains. Morning coffee at Upstairs Restaurant means the rest of your early morning cuppas will have a tough time catching up.

4. The Book Cafe

Although the name gives it all away before we start to elaborate, what it doesn’t tell you that this isn’t a regular hideout for visitors, travellers, and tourists. Bibliophiles, we hope you don’t end up spending your Bhutan trip here, gulping down books instead of exploring the outdoors. We wouldn’t blame you though. The Book Cafe sure does a good job at luring coffee-lovers and bookworms, even though finding the place may need some effort.
