As countries across the globe have started to reopen for tourism, each has imposed its own set of rules and regulations for the safety and wellbeing of both tourists as well as locals during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Cambodia’s new rule has come as a shock for travellers, as those planning a trip to the country will have to pay USD 3,000 service charge via cash or credit card, which will also include USD 1,500 cremation charges in case of death, and the person will also need to have a travel insurance cover of USD 50,000.

“On June 10, authorities announced a requirement that all foreign travellers entering Cambodia pay a deposit of USD 3,000 upon arrival at airports for mandatory COVID-19 testing and potential treatment services. Travellers should be prepared to see this deposit applied to a minimum of USD 165 for mandatory COVID-19 testing, approximately USD 1,281 more to support a quarantine in the event one or more passengers on their flight test positive, and a minimum of approximately USD 3,255 more for treatment and quarantine if the traveller tests positive,” US Embassy in Cambodia mentioned on its official website.

As you deposit the money, out of the total amount, USD 5 will be charged for transport and testing centre, USD 100 for COVID-19 test, approximately USD 60 for an overnight stay at a hotel and three meals. However, in case the passenger tests negative for Coronavirus, the remaining balance from the deposit will be returned, but he/she will still have to self-isolate upon arrival to the accommodation.

If the person tests positive, around USD 330 per day will be deducted from the deposit as hospital charges. Moreover, in the case of death, cremation service charges would cost USD 1,500.

Furthermore, if any passenger on flight tests positive, then all his co-passengers will also have to be quarantined at an approved accommodation, for two weeks at a cost of USD 1,176 per person, and will have to take a second COVID-19 test worth USD 100.

“To restore the economy and reopen the country gradually. All countries would do the same. So, Cambodia and other countries alike need to charge for treatment costs because we can’t let anyone come for treatment free of charge,” Office of Cambodia’s Prime Minister said in a tweet.
