Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is the first airport to achieve level 4+ accreditation under Airport Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, in the whole of Asia-Pacific region, which makes it one with the best carbon emission reduction management bodies in the area.

The above-mentioned announcement was made at ACI EUROPE Annual Congressand also included Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in the United States, at the top two position, along with IGIA India.

It was only in 2016 that Delhi airport had become the first Carbon Neutral Airport in Asia Pacific. The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) further aims at making it Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport by 2030.

“Achievement of the Level 4+ accreditation is a testimony of our commitment towards ensuring sustainable development at IGIA. Going forward, we will continue to develop best in class infrastructure and provide services using innovative and sustainable technologies. Our aim is to achieve “net zero carbon emission” airport by 2030 by following various Government of India initiatives and the Airport Carbon Accreditation guidelines. With this achievement, we have set up a new benchmark in the aviation industry on climate change mitigation,” DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said, as mentioned on Delhi Airport’s official website.

Airport Carbon Accreditation, which is the only institutionally-endorsed, global carbon management certification programme for airports, independently assesses and recognises efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions through six levels — mapping, reduction, optimisation, neutrality, transformation and transition.

“Delhi’s IGI Airport is raising the bar in Asia-Pacific by becoming one of the first airports in the world to obtain the new important Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4+ Transition accreditation,” Stefano Baronci, Director General, ACI Asia-Pacific, was quoted as saying by the New Indian Express.
