Ever since India has resumed its domestic air travel from May 23, after nearly three months of suspension, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has screened about 2.5 lakh passengers, of which nearly 20 per cent have been international passengers. Earlier, while domestic travellers were allowed to straight away go to home quarantine, international travellers were supposed to stay in a week-long institutional quarantine followed by another week of home quarantine.

The PMC desk was active round to clock to make sure that every single passenger arriving at the airport is screened. Upon initial resumption of air travel, Pune had witnessed a total of only 1,200 arrivals in May, however, now it welcomes at least 4,500 passengers every day.

As reported by The Indian Express, Ashok Ghorpade, PMC garden superintendent who was in charge of the COVID-19 desk at the Pune airport said, “Every passenger was asked some basic questions, and was stamped with a ‘home quarantine’ stamp, and told to stay at home for 14 days.”

The current scenario is different, though. While domestic travellers are free of all restrictions, international travellers can also skip the week-long institutional quarantine by providing a valid test report that confirms they are COVID-19 negative. They can also take a test after landing at the Pune airport, and skip the quarantine, if the results are negative.

While Pune airport does not see many international flights in the current scenario, a civic officer explained while talking to The Indian Express, “There are many passengers who come from abroad at various airports in the country and then take domestic flights to reach Pune. Also, many passengers land at Pune airport to go to their respective homes in neighbouring districts.”

Meanwhile, the Airport Authority of India has decided to go ahead with some development work at the Pune airport from October 26. Once it kicks in, the airport will be operational for only 12 hours a day.

Not just Pune, but Mumbai airport has also discontinued the home quarantine stamp for domestic passengers. All the other rules and conditions are the same as followed at the Pune airport.
