Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has recently announced Gujarat Heritage Tourism Policy 2020-2025, in an attempt to boost both domestic as well as international tourism.
As per the policy, all historical buildings, i.e., all kinds of forts, palaces and monuments built before January 1, 1950, have now been given permission to be converted into hotels, restaurants, heritage banquet halls and museums. However, it has also been made clear that while doing this, it’s mandatory to ensure that the basic heritage structure is not damaged.
“CM Shri @vijayrupanibjp announces the State’s first Heritage Tourism Policy allowing historical monuments, palaces, forts constructed before 1950 to be converted into hotels, heritage museums, heritage banquet halls and restaurants,” CMO Gujarat tweeted.

Moreover, the state government has also announced that it will provide financial assistance of INR 5-10 crores for the renovation and expansion of these buildings. In fact, reports further suggest, that for heritage museums, restaurants and banquet halls, the government has sanctioned an aid of INR 45 lakh to 1 crore.
Other provisions that the government has planned to give in these five years include 100 per cent relief in electricity duty, rent assistance and marketing support during national and international events.
“We have a lot of heritage properties in Saurashtra and South Gujarat. This can be very attractive to tourists. This policy has been declared after many rounds of discussions with the stakeholders,” Mamta Varma, Secretary, Tourism Department, told Indian Express.

Apart from the Heritage Tourism Policy, the state government has also revised its Home State Policy, which allows homeowners to convert their property into a tourist facility/ accommodation. “With an aim to provide tourists an opportunity to experience Gujarati culture, tradition and cuisines and to boost rural employment opportunities in tourism & hospitality sector, CM Shri @vijayrupanibjp decides to simplify provisions of existing Gujarat Home Stay Policy 2014-19,” CMO Gujarat mentioned in another tweet.
