Indore And Surat Shine Bright As India's Cleanest Cities In 2023

Madhya Pradesh’s Indore and Gujarat’s Surat have been conferred with the cleanest cities in India title at Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023.

If you’re planning a visit to Indore or Surat soon, here’s some excellent news! These cities have been jointly awarded the title of the Cleanest Cities in India at the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 ceremony held on January 11, 2024.

Indore has now clinched the top spot for the seventh consecutive time, maintaining its impressive track record. Navi Mumbai retained its third position, similar to the ranking in 2022. In the category of cleanest cities with a population under one lakh, Saswad, Patan, and Lonavala secured the first three positions. Varanasi was recognised as the Cleanest Ganga Town, closely followed by Prayagraj (Allahabad). The MHOW Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh was declared the Cleanest Cantonment Board, and Chandigarh was honoured as the Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher.

Organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Swachh Survekshan stands as the largest global survey on urban sanitation and cleanliness.

According to a release from the Press Information Bureau, President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards at the event and highlighted the importance of sustainability and the Swachh Bharat Mission. She emphasised the adoption of circular waste management and the recycling and reusing of items in the circular economy process for sustainable development.

Indore and Surat: India’s cleanliness mascots

Indore, a city immersed in rich culture and heritage, boasts attractions such as Sarafa Bazaar — a haven for foodies. As Madhya Pradesh’s largest city, Indore is home to numerous palaces and temples, including Rajwada, Kanch Mandir, Lalbagh Palace, Annapurna Mandir, Khajrana Ganesh Temple and Gulawat Valley.
