As the Islamic calendar rings in the first day of Ramadan today, we look at how the world is celebrating this holy month during lockdown. By Bayar Jain
Celebrated during the holy month according to the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a festival Muslims await all year along. The month-long fasting period doubles as a time for believers to indulge in spiritual reflection, self-improvement and even heighten their connection with Allah. These fasts are sandwiched by a meal just before dawn (sehri) and one right after sunset (iftar). Eid-ul-Fitr or the festival marking the end of the fasting comprises of a celebratory meal – the first one eaten during the daytime throughout Ramadan.
Although this Islamic festival is marked by community fasting and collective feasting, this time the situation has taken an unprecedented turn. Considering many countries are under lockdown, various measures have been undertaken to ensure safety without letting this festive spirit from dying down.
1. Bahrain

The Islamic kingdom has urged its citizens to restrict Iftar to small family gatherings and has also requested people to refrain from hosting or attending public Iftar banquets, Ghabghas, Ramdan Majlises, and etc. Moreover, the Kingdom has also replaced Zakat Al- Fitr (charity) kiosks with electronic platforms and applications for collection and distribution. Unlike its Gulf neighbours, Bahrain will reportedly host some public Taraweeh prayers in its al-Fateh Grand Mosque. However, the prayers will reportedly only involve the imam and five people to ensure social distancing rules. Sources suggest that these prayers are likely to be televised. Prayer rooms and mosques, however, continue to remain suspended.
2. India

In India, the Islamic Centre of India is reportedly making announcements. These advisories urge Muslims to perform Ramzan rituals from their homes while maintaining social distancing alongside.
3. Egypt

As per reports, the religious authorities in the Arab Republic of Egypt has barred charity tables. Moreover, mosques have reportedly been shut for a month.
4. Saudi Arabia

According to reports, the country has revised its coronavirus curfew timings for this month, allowing residents to go out for necessary needs between 9 am and 5 pm. Moreover, the country is reportedly suspending visas for Muslims seeking to make pilgrimages to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina
5. UAE

Sources reveal that the country has advised its citizens to undertake prayers at home during this period as mosques continue to remain closed for now.
