In the recent past, many Italian towns were putting up houses for sale with prices stooping as low as INR 75, as part of the country’s efforts to repopulate its picturesque and abandoned villages. The global pandemic brought this unique offer to a halt but it is now back with even better deals for you to buy your dream Italian home. By Amitha Ameen

The beautiful region of Calabria is one of the least visited regions in Italy, and home to national parks, rolling hills, and crystal blue seas. With Italy having been the epicentre of COVID-19 these last few months, the country, in general, has been in a bad shape with the tourism industry, in particular, taking many hits.

Calabria has many sleepy yet picturesque and charming little villages, and one of them called Cinquefrondi is where you can now own a traditional Italian home if you want to. What’s better is that the town of Cinquefrondi is claiming to be Corona-free, and is selling homes for just $1 (INR 75), for those interested.

“Finding new owners for the many abandoned houses we have is a key part of the Operation Beauty [mission] that I have launched to recover degraded, lost parts of town,” said Mayor of Cinquefrondi Michele Conia to CNN. The $1 homes are part of Italy’s mission to repopulate abandoned villages.

So far, the town has reported zero Coronavirus cases among its existing residents and is located in a comfortable distance away from everything. Those interested in this unique and amazing proposition will be expected to renovate the house and pay an annual policy insurance fee of $284 (INR 21539.27). Those who don’t complete the renovation within the stipulated three year period will be asked to pay a fine of $22,700 (INR 172,0830.25).
