Coincidentally, the decision concurs with Onam celebrations, adding to the joy of travellers. If you were planning to witness this year’s Onam celebrations in Kerala, don’t ditch your plan yet as the home of backwaters, houseboats and unmatched serenity is calling you.
Those looking forward to visiting the state must adhere to the COVID-19 safety norms put in place by the state. Every tourist must present a COVID-19 negative certificate and receipts for their accommodation booking. Not just that, visitors must stay in Kerala for a minimum of three to five days.
Since tourism is one of the main streams of revenue for Kerala, the state has borne the brunt of the Coronavirus induced lockdown, heavily. Recent reports say that the Kerala state government has announced a 455-crore loan scheme to revive the tourism sector.

Notably, this is the second time that Kerala is opening its borders for domestic travellers. Looking at the state’s dependability on tourism as a form of revenue, the government had opened the borders for tourists immediately after the lockdown started fading. However, the rising numbers of the Coronavirus cases and the widespread panic regarding travelling during the peak of an ongoing pandemic kept the traveller’s count at a bare minimum.
Ideally, the peak tourism season in Kerala starts from September to March, and these reopening dates are coinciding with the same. The government is planning to carry this reopening in a phased manner while ensuring all safety measures are in place. Hotels will be allowed to open only a part of their properties for tourists, and any form of conventions and campfires will be prohibited.
