“I’m The Sun, Sand And Surf Sort Of Girl,” -- Malaika Arora

Malaika Arora is the perfect personification of ‘bold and beautiful’. From being the first person to hit the yoga class on our wellness retreat to diving into the Indian Ocean with reckless abandon, she exudes a unique charisma. The diva talks to our Digital Editor on travel, well-being, and more. By Priyanka Chakrabarti

What is your definition of wellness? And what do you make of wellness retreats?

For me, it (wellness) is a combination of the mind, body, and soul. Each aspect must be aligned. If your mind is in the right place, your body follows. I try to go for wellness retreats once in a year for about 10-14 days to get rejuvenated.

What do you think of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort and its spa?

Oh, it (the resort) is beautiful! It’s a relatively new property, but they have a wonderful staff and the location is stunning. I fell asleep the moment my masseuse started kneading my back. The treatment, ambience, aroma, space, and the sense of tranquillity—all of it was lovely.

How do you balance mental, physical, and emotional well-being?

Being in a nice, happy space is essential. Our lives are hectic and sometimes stressful, but I feel that good sleep, yoga, and a great meal can put everything on track.

Are you a yoga person or a gym person?

I like to do a little bit of everything. But yoga, I’d say, has changed my life, and I ensure that I do it every day.

Any fitness mantra for our readers?

Even on the days when you don’t feel like going to the gym or doing yoga, make sure you get out of your bed and dedicate one hour to yourself!

Tips on mindful eating when on a vacation?

Don’t practise mindful eating when you’re on vacation. Isn’t that the whole point of it? Having said that, it’s always good to eat in moderation and on time. But, try to eat your last meal before sunset.

What’s your take on conscious travelling?

In today’s age, it’s vital to love and preserve our environment. If you can in any way, do ensure that—any small gesture will make an impact.

Your most memorable holiday?

There are so many of them, but any holiday in the Maldives is very special to me. This is one of the most wonderful places on Earth, and it’s here that you can disconnect  from everything.

Next trip?

Australia.

What was your most memorable road trip?

The one with my girlfriends from Los Angeles to Vegas was outstanding.

Beach or mountain?

I’m the sun, sand, and surf sort of girl.

Your preferred weekend getaway from Mumbai, and why?

Goa. There’s something about the air that just makes you want to drift away. There’s something magical about Goa!

What do you love most about Mumbai?

It’s a city that never sleeps. Mumbai’s energy cannot be contained; there’s a distinct vibrancy to it, and all of that gives Mumbai a magnetic power that pulls you.
