J&K's Mansar Lake To Get A Makeover In Order To Attract 20 Lakh Tourists Annually

Jammu and Kashmir‘s Mansar Lake is a prominent tourist destination because of its serene beauty and the presence of multiple temples around its vicinity. Now, the lake is all set to get a makeover with an aim to attract over 20 lakh tourists every year. By Kumar Shree

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr Jitendra Singh and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, have recently inaugurated a new plan for the development of Mansar Lake. Located 62 kilometres from Jammu, the lake enjoys significant popularity among locals and travellers alike.

At present, the Mansar region attracts nearly 10 lakh visitors annually; the numbers are expected to double up after the completion of this development project, hence boosting the area’s income by over INR 800 crore every year and increasing employment opportunities, consequently.

The Mansar Lake and the entire region is an important location, not just from a pilgrimage point of view, but also from a heritage destination perspective as well. While its Sheshnag temple attracts many newlyweds, other activities popular among visitors include fishing and boating.

As reported by The Tribune, Singh, in his media interaction after the virtual inauguration said, “While Udhampur-Doda-Kathua is possibly the only Lok Sabha constituency in the country which has received three medical colleges in three years, Udhampur is possibly the only district in the country which has on the lines of Namami Ganga and Ganga cleaning project received two similar rejuvenation and renovation projects for River Devika and Mansar Lake, respectively.”

Since tourism contributes to about seven per cent of Jammu and Kashmir’s GDP and the sector has taken a severe hit because of the Coronavirus pandemic, the government is putting in place additional measures to revive the same in the region.
