We’ve all been talking about how the weather in Delhi and other parts of India have been facing extreme cold temperatures after almost a century. Now, according to scientists, our planet could face an even bigger dilemma. Read on to know more. By Amitha Ameen
The earth could face biting cold weather conditions as the sun enters a natural hibernation called Solar Minimum – a period of least solar activity in the 11-year cycle of sun. Thanks to the ongoing climate crisis, we could be entering one of the lowest cycles in over 200 years.
What this could mean is cold and wet winters and summers, food shortages and freezing temperature levels making it difficult to carry on with daily life routines. The last time this phenomena occurred was between 1645 to 1715 when the sun’s brightness significantly reduced resulting in dropped temperatures. The cold was so brutal that the river Thames and the Amsterdam canals froze – an event that is rare and unimaginable in this day and age.
According to NASA, the planet could find itself in a similar situation by 2025 – just five years down the line. Scary right?
But there are reports that deny this theory as well. Some scientists believe that the ‘solar minimum’ will not have much of an effect thanks to rising average temperatures, courtesy of global warming. These scientists, as reported by the sun.co, believe that extreme heatwaves are what folks really need to worry about.
Now whatever be the case, it is up to us to champion our local communities into being aware of their actions and how they adversely affect the planet. We’re not saying become the next Greta Thunberg, but every small step counts right?
