New Delhi Railway Station is all set to get a makeover worth INR 6,200 crores. Not only will it feature all airport-like amenities, but will also look almost the same. The size of the railway station will be increased with a built-up area of nearly 33 lakh square feet, which is almost 60 per cent the size of IGIA’s Terminal 3. The surrounding railway land around the station will get a couple of new high-rises on the Ajmeri gate side. These buildings will offer commercial spaces for offices, hotels and other establishments by 2025.

If you are already enamoured by the imagination of it, here’s some more news for you. The New Delhi Railway Station will also get a brand-new retail-cum-amenity area spanning across nearly 5,50,000 square feet. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has already invited bids for this development, which projects an estimated cost of INR 6,200 crores.

The project, apart from taking your travel experience to the next level, will prove to be a boon for the Connaught Place area that will take a break from the station-bound traffic. The plan also includes building four flyovers to connect the roads surrounding the station as this will make the commute pretty seamless.

The mega project also includes developing a wide pedestrian boulevard from the station to the Connaught Place, and more than 5,000 car parking bays across single or multi-level parking.

The existing station building will be transformed into a two-storey structure, while the upgraded station will have separate arrival and departure sections much like an airport.

The private player to secure the bid will get a lease of 60 years to recover their investments on the project. Given that the New Delhi Railway Station is the largest and second busiest station in the country, the government is expecting to attract multiple worthy bids for the project.
