Travellers in Ladakh have been advised by the state’s tourism department to pre-book their stay before heading to Pangong Lake. This comes in amidst complaints regarding difficulty getting accommodation in high-altitude areas due to the peak-season tourist rush. Here’s what you need to know. By Eshita Srinivas
Pangong Lake, the world’s highest saltwater lake, is a vision in blue. The water body lies at an altitude of 4,350 metres and extends for several kilometres across India and China. Surrounded by picturesque, snow-clad mountains, the spot draws a host of tourists from across the globe every year. This high footfall, naturally, has resulted in difficulties booking accommodations, especially during peak season. The Ladakh Tourism Department has hence issued an advisory to visitors, asking them to pre-book their accommodation to avoid any last-minute hassle.

In a release by The Administration Of Union Territory Of Ladakh Directorate of Tourism, the officials noted that the Pangong lake area had limited accommodation facilities. “Pangong lake area is a wild-life notified sanctuary and hence accommodation availability is limited.” the advisory stated, before adding, “Tourists/visitors should avoid plans of stay at Pangong without prior booking of accommodation.”

Besides this, the state asked tourists not to travel to high-altitude areas like Khardongla, Changla, Pangong Lake, Tsomoriri and Penzela before 48 hours have elapsed since their arrival in Leh. This is likely to ensure acclimatisation and ease of travel. Visitors have also been asked to book conveyance in advance through registered travel agents and tour operators.

The state even pushed for conscious travel, stating in the release, “Tourists/visitors are advised to contribute in maintenance of cleanliness at all tourist spots and along all routes. They are advised to respect nature, environment, local traditions and culture and follow all rules, regulations and (official) advisories.” The best time to visit Ladakh is in the summer, between the months of April and July.
