Reopening after six months, Rohtang Pass is a much-loved tourist spot for its snow-covered path and breathtaking view. By Shrimayee Thakur
Rohtang Pass, known for its snow-lined picturesque path, opened on June 1, much to the delight of tourists who seized the opportunity to explore the picturesque location. Sitting at a height of 13,050 ft in the Himalayan range, it is the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti valleys, and offers a magnificent view of surrounding peaks, such as the twin peaks of Geypan, glaciers, Chandra River and Lahaul Valley. After an order from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), permits for 1,300 vehicles will be issued everyday. The pass will be closed every Tuesday for maintenance.
Rohtang pass receives heavy snowfall every year, and is thus closed during winters. It was closed to tourists since December last year, and only opens from June to October. According to the NGT’s orders, 850 petrol and 450 diesel vehicles will be allowed to go beyond the Gulaba barrier to the Manali-Rohtang passage every day. For tourists going beyond Rohtang, bookings must be made in advance for accommodation, duly registered with the state’s tourism department. Vehicles going to Rohtang will be given access from 7:45 am to 10 am while those going beyond, to Lahaul and Pangi will be permitted from 10 am to 11 am.
The nearest places to stay are in Manali, which is around 51 kms away. Tourists can enjoy adventure activities such as sledge rides, skiing mountain biking, snow scooters and tyre drops while at Rohtang. Equipment is available for rent at the spot. On the way to the pass, the Rahala waterfall is also worth stopping for. Sixteen kms away from Manali, this is a well-known picnic spot for tourists.
