Established in 1976, it was officially recognised in 2007 after merging with the Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary. This riverine forest shelters several animals including leopards, sloth bears, jungle cats, hyenas and more. The mugger crocodiles and pythons attract a lot of eyeballs, too!

Between the forest and the river, lies a vast patch of land filled with white sand. It is a famous camping spot. With some bonfire and music on the side, you will easily transcend into a surreal zone, away from the chaos of daily life.

Since it is a non-commercialised area, there are not many establishments around. However, you can explore a few natural treats located on the outskirts of Satkosia. Purunakote is another similar forest range where you can witness exotic wildlife species like chital and giant squirrel. Chhotkei is a hill range in the area that offers stellar panoramic views of the entire Satkosia range. You can also visit Tikarpada, which extends along the banks of River Mahanadi; it is a picturesque location for camping and overnight stay.

Here are some fun activities you can indulge in during your trip to Satkosia:

  • Go on a boating tour on River Mahanadi; the experience is ethereal.
  • This is one of the best locations in India to indulge in some wildlife exploration and bird-watching. If you are into wildlife photography, keep your cameras ready because you’ll get some exquisite shots.
  • Go on a jungle trek in the woods. The hilly forest regions have marked out trekking routes for the convenience of tourists.
  • Don’t miss out on stargazing by the riverside.

Stay

The Satkosia Sands Resort is the most prominent stay option in the area. From cotton tents to cottages, they have something for all kinds of travellers. They also provide authentic Odia delicacies and have a good range of dining options. You can also witness folk dance performances and interact with the natives on request.

Getting There

The nearest airport is in Bhubaneswar, Odisha; Satkosia is a three-hour drive from here. The closest railway station is the Khurda Junction, from where it’s a two-hour ride. You can also do a 10-hour road trip from Kolkata, West Bengal.

Best Time To Visit

It is best to visit Satkosia between October to March.
