In a bid to make things easier and as a clear indication of the end of luxurious hotel quarantines, Singapore has introduced tracking devices that will need to be worn by travellers upon arrival. This new move has been brought forth keeping in tune with the country’s new 14-day ‘Stay-Home’ order that requires people to quarantine themselves at homes or dedicated facilities.

The health ministry of Singapore has introduced these tracking devices as a way of monitoring passengers on their whereabouts during the quarantine period. Passengers, barring those under 12 years of age, will be required to pick up their devices after clearing immigration and activate their monitors once they arrive at their quarantine facility. This way, when someone leaves or attempts to leave their quarantine location or tamper with the device, authorities will immediately be alerted on the same and follow up with an investigation.

While this will prove to be an effective way of ensuring that incoming passengers strictly adhere to their 14-day quarantine period, it has raised a few eyebrows in regards to the privacy aspect of these tracking devices. Singapore’s government reiterates that personal information will not be stored and that the device will not have any voice or video recording. Further, the device uses Bluetooth signals to determine the location of the wearer and the data transmitted will be encrypted.

Singapore has 55,279 confirmed cases of which 48,195 recoveries are reported (as on August 10, 2020). The country is currently conducting early-stage clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine called Lunar-Con19 that will be administered on volunteers next week onwards.
