The ongoing pandemic has given rise to budding chefs and new hobbies. But with Her Majesty, things took a different turn as she resorted to launching her own dry gin, made using ingredients from her 20,000-acred country estate, Sandringham.
As per Sandringham’s official Twitter account, this locally-distilled Sandringham Gin includes foliage from myrtle plants. Adding to the exclusivity is the fact that these plants date back to Queen Alexandra and King Edward VII’s wedding bouquet. Their official website—from where one can also buy the coveted dry gin—states that Sharon fruit, and Chinese Persimmon (a woody tree related to Ebony) are also used for the distillation.
Notably, Sharon fruit is grown in the Walled Garden of the residence. The website notes that this sheltered wall was built on the winnings of King Edward VII’s famous racehorse, Persimmon.

As per reports by Republic World, Her Majesty has a penchant for dry gin, particularly when paired with Dubonnet and lemon. In line with her love for the drink, the royal residence launched the Buckingham Palace Gin in July 2020, states the Royal Collection Trust’s official Twitter handle. Also regal in its origins, this version of the citrus drink is locally-sourced from the palace gardens, replete with 12 hand-picked botanicals like lemon, verbena, hawthorn berries, and mulberry leaves, among other things.
Priced at GBP 50 (approximately INR 4,945) for a half-litre bottle, the royal drink is not available for international shipments currently. Nonetheless, it has captured the attention of netizens and celebrities world over.
