Post the sealing of international borders and a temporary lull in all kinds of travel because of the ongoing pandemic, tourism in India has seen a big hit, resulting in major losses for the industry. However, as things start to ease in the nation, the Tourism Ministry is strategizing measures to lure tourists again by assuring them a safe visit. One such step is introducing COVID-19 insurance in India for foreign tourists visiting the nation.
As per a report by Business Standard, the Tourism Ministry’s Additional Director General, Rupinder Brar hinted at this possibility during an industry webinar. The report further adds that Brar claimed that the ministry is currently studying similar policies introduced by other nations like Singapore. Reportedly, discussions with insurance companies and the Finance Ministry are already underway to facilitate the same.

As per a report by Live Mint, the Singapore version of the COVID-19 insurance for travellers can cover up to SGD 30,000 (approximately INR 16,51,880) during a stay. For this, three insurance companies have worked together along with the nation’s Ministry of Health (to estimate the minimum coverage sum required for medical treatments) to develop the insurance package.
Reportedly, India’s Tourism Ministry is also thinking of introducing a promotional campaign highlighting the nation’s infrastructural prowess and various tourist attractions; however, no details of the same have been revealed yet. For domestic travellers, the government is reportedly thinking of releasing videos highlighting safety measures undertaken by airlines and airports. All these measures, the government feels, will work towards instilling confidence in travellers—both, domestic and international.
