Hyderabad is so much more than its meaty delights. And now it’s official! By Ritika Dixit
Do you picture a plate of lip-smacking sumptuous Biryani every time someone mentions Hyderabad? It is time to think again! The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently anointed Hyderabad as India’s Most Vegan-Friendly City 2019. This comes shortly following UNESCO’s recognition of Hyderabad as the Creative City of Gastronomy, a title owing to the city’s growing vegan-community and its availability of meat-free food options. In short, Hyderabad seems to be on a culinary roll!
With many sought after eating points like Smart Alec – Alternative Deli, that offers curries and butter chicken with mock meat, or Terrassen Cafe, which dishes out only vegan-friendly pizzas, plates of pasta, sandwiches and smoothies, Hyderabad has everything in store for the vegans of the city.
Do you have a sweet tooth but abstain from dairy products? Fret not as you can order dairy-free ice cream from Frozera or grab your favourites from a variety of cookies, doughnuts, cakes and tarts — which are free of any animal-based ingredients — offered at Cookie Queen or The Lush Glaze.
If you are new to the plant-based lifestyle and still unsure about making the right food choices or if you are simply looking for people with similar life preferences as you, you must join the Hyderabad Vegans group. Here, you can dive straight into the animal-friendly spirit with regularly organised potlucks and other events aimed at spreading awareness about this style of life. The vegan lifestyle in Hyderabad need not be restricted to the food choices one makes. A vegan-friendly store called Planetarium is the first of its kind to offer a wide range of products from cosmetics, protein mixes, treats and much more.
From pure mutton haleem to vegan sorbets at Almond House, Hyderabad can be an ideal retreat for all foodies irrespective of their lifestyle preferences. Go ahead, and make your pick!
