Have you always fancied being an astronaut? While travelling to space might not be a reality anytime soon for us commoners, we have found the next best thing. NASA has just introduced a perfume ‘Eau de Space’ that smells exactly like outer space. Pretty cool, right? By Amitha Ameen

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has many achievements under its belt. Its most recent one, a perfume, is our most favourite because now we too can know how outer space smells like, even if we can’t go there, yet.
The perfume was originally developed years ago, to help astronauts get accustomed to the smell of outer space before their missions. According to a report on CNN, the perfume was developed by Steve Pearce, founder of Omega ingredients, and a chemist himself; it took four years to create ‘Eau de Space’.

“I think it kind of has almost a bitter kind of smell in addition to being smoky and burned. It’s kind of like a smell from a gun, right after you fire the shot,” said astronaut and former International space station resident, Peggy Whitson during a 2002 CNN interview.
The perfume, which was only designated to astronauts is being made available to the public, thanks to a fundraiser on the platform Kickstarter and as a means of encouraging more interest in STEM through experiential programmes in educational institutions.
Eau de Space product manager, Matt Richmond told CNN that although he struggles with describing the smell of the perfume, astronauts have described it as “a mix of gunpowder, seared steak, raspberries, and rum.”
Regular scents are now so passe and we cannot wait to own one of these bottles that retail for $34 (INR 2,570).
