Pune's Public Transportation Goes The Electric Route. Here Are All The Deets.

In an electrifying turn of events, Pune is now home to 25 electric buses that will ply passengers back and forth across seven routes (as of now), twice a day. By Gayatri Moodliar

Brought in by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited, these buses can run for 225 kilometres on a full charge, which takes about four hours to reach. With a capacity of holding 45 passengers, the electric buses run up to a length of nine metres, and the fare will reportedly cost the same as regular buses. The special charging stations for these buses have been set up in Bhekrainagar and Nigdi, both spots will also serve as the holding point of the buses.

If you’re worried about the buses running out of juice while commuting, don’t fret; they’ve all been fit with emergency power banks to overcome such a situation.

India Times has reported that this is just the first phase of the electric bus-roll out, and more and being planned for later this year, with more than 300 already slotted in the blueprint.

More cities are joining the electric bandwagon, Lucknow City Transport Services Ltd. just announced a partnership with Tata Motors to wheel out electric buses within the next four months. Other public transport agencies that reportedly have tie-ups with Tata Motors include those in West Bengal, Guwahati, Jammu and Jaipur.
