You Need To Shop At These 5 Floating Markets Before They Vanish!

Underground markets are cool. And, so are markets at the topmost story of a skyscraper. But, there’s nothing as cool as a floating market. Not only are floating markets across the world known for selling the freshest local produce but they also make for great tourist attractions. They’ve become a rare sight now, so before they vanish entirely, here are a few you should visit. By Shubhanjana Das

1. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Thailand:

This 100-year old floating market is one of the most famous in the world and is an inevitable addition to any tourist’s must-see list. Here, shopping is anything but a dull experience. The three markets of Ton Khem, Hia Kui, and Khun Phitak form a complex here at Damnoen Saduak with the former being the most popular. It’s loud, vibrant, and chaotic, but super-fun and exciting! Fresh fruits and local produce off the banks of the Khlong Damnoen Saduak canal.

2. Dal Lake Floating Market, Srinagar:

‘Heaven on Earth’ both for nature and mountain lovers as well as shopaholics, Srinagar is Kashmir has the much renowned floating market on the iconic Dal Lake that sells fresh veggies early in the morning. And by early, we mean 5 am to 7 am every day. Brave the chill you are bent on witnessing this absolute spectacle.

3. The Solomon Islands Floating Market, Australia:

The South Asian floating markets may be bigger and larger by scale and size, but the Solomon Islands market is no less fascinating. Located in North East of Australia, east of Papua New Guinea, this market floats on clear blue waters and…wait for it…coral reefs! That’s right. We’re getting our tickets to Australia ASAP!

4. Mekong Delta Floating Market, Vietnam:

The Mekong Delta has not one but two floating markets! The Phung Hiep and the Cai Cai Rang markets are some of the most visited in Vietnam. The latter has even been declared a National Intangible Heritage of the country. Like other floating markets, even this one has vendors selling fresh fruits and veggies. Phung Hiep is the biggest and busiest and as you may already have guessed, you will have to sacrifice on sleep and witness the business hours during the early hours of the morning.

5. Amphawa Market, Thailand:

This Thai floating market is not as big as its neighbour in the Damnoen Saduak, but it is surely the haunt of seafood lovers. Shrimps, squids, and clams – wish for it, and you shall have it! By the way, this one stays open all the way from 4 pm to 9 pm. Happy 5 hours of devouring seafood!
