AirlineRatings, a global airline-rating system, recently unveiled the world’s safest airlines, in which Australia’s Qantas earned top-spot. Qatar Airways, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, and Emirates clinched the following positions. While EVA Air and Etihad Airways came in 6th and 7th, respectively, Alaska Airlines earned the 8th spot, followed by Cathay Pacific Airways and British Airways to complete the top 10.

Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of AirlineRatings, is quoted as saying, “Qantas has been recognised by the British Advertising Standards Association in a test case as the world’s most experienced airline.” Thomas further notes that this leading airline hasn’t had a fatality in the pure jet era either.

In fact, in the same report, Thomas further goes on to say that all top 20 airlines—Virgin Australia/Virgin Atlantic (11th), Hawaiian Airlines (12th), Southwest Airlines (13th), Delta Air Lines (14th), American Airlines (15th), Scandinavian Airlines (16th), Finnair (17th), Lufthansa (18th), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (19th), and United Airlines (20th)—are standouts.

As per the release, factors such as airline’s crash and serious incidents records; audits from aviation’s governing and industry bodies; government audits; fleet age; and industry-leading safety initiatives are taken into account when choosing the winners. Innovations and launch of new aircrafts are reportedly some of the other criteria factored in as well.

Launched in 2013, AirlineRatings rates the safety and in-flight products of over 385 airlines worldwide using a seven-star rating system. Keeping in mind the changing aviation scenario, adherence to COVID-19 protocols has been added to this list as well. In an earlier report, the rating system revealed some of these top COVID-19 compliant airlines as well. This includes airlines such as AirAsia, Lufthansa, Jetblue, Singapore Airlines, and more.
